When someone mentions an island escape to Greece, what is the first thing that you think of? Whitewashed villages and blue domed churches? Volcanic cliffs overlooking crystal clear waters?
You and so many others. But what if there was another side to Greece’s islands? One that is equally striking but in a very different way. A verdant, elegant, and unexpected dimension that remains true to Greece’s timeless allure but at the same time revitalizes it.
That’s the Ionian Islands, Greece’s unsung paradise of lush landscapes, dramatic beaches, and cosmopolitan charm.
And taking us there today as part of the final installment in Greece by Travelive’s series of advisor-picked, themed itineraries is none other than Director of Sales for Greece, Kostas Sourvanos, the man who probably knows more about Greece than anyone on Earth, and maybe even beyond it.
So, with that, Kosta, are we off to the Ionian?

Kostas Sourvanos | Director of Sales, Greece
We are indeed. Throughout my years of working with Greece, I’ve made it a personal mission to always introduce travelers to a side of it that offers a different rhythm, a different palette, and a different kind of beauty. The Ionian Islands are a perfect example of that. And this itinerary captures them at their most unforgettable.
11 Nights / 12 Days
- 3 Nights in Athens
- 4 Nights in Zakynthos
- 4 Nights in Kefalonia
2 Nights in Athens — The Gateway to Paradise
Whenever I design a journey through Greece, I like to begin in Athens; not just because it is the gateway to the country, but because it grounds everything that follows in meaning.
There is something incredibly powerful about standing where the foundations of democracy took shape. Walking through the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora, you don’t simply observe history, you begin to understand the ideas that contributed to the formation of the world we know today. It sets a tone of curiosity and perspective that brings character and intrigue to any journey; even one that’s just destined to end up on a beach.
At the same time, I often also suggest balancing that intellectual side with something more hands-on and personal. A ceramic and pottery workshop offers exactly that. In a relaxed Athenian studio, travelers can shape their own piece of clay under the guidance of a local artisan, connecting with a craft that has been part of Greek culture for centuries.
For me, this contrast is what makes Athens the perfect starting point: thought-provoking, creative, and deeply human.
4 Nights in Zakynthos — Ionian Elegance in Bloom
At this point, most island-bound journeys will take you south across the Aegean and into the heart of the Cyclades; but this is where this trip stands out.
Instead, a different shade of blue will appear on the horizon, as the renowned turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea reveal Zakynthos and with it a side of Greece that feels entirely different in character.
Often referred to as the “Flower of the East,” Zakynthos resonates with a refined and almost aristocratic charm, which is perfectly captured with a tour of its main town (also known as Zante). Here, Venetian heritage colors every street with cosmopolitan charm. A one-of-a-kind Perfume House adds a new layer to Greece’s artisanal heritage. And the historic Solomos Square pays tribute to Dionysios Solomos, the poet who gave Greece its national anthem.
But what I truly love about Zakynthos is how effortlessly it balances its sophistication with striking natural beauty and the gifts of its lands. A boat journey to the famed Blue Caves reveals a coastline sculpted like a work of art, where light dances across aquamarine waters and ignites them in the most mesmerizing way.
Meanwhile, visiting a family-run organic farm and the island’s oldest winery lets you build a deeper connection to it; be it through tastings of fragrant olive oils, sips of premium wine, or through the warm, traditional hospitality of those who’ve crafted them for generations.
For me, Zakynthos is where elegance meets authenticity, and it is the perfect introduction to Greece’s Ionian spirit.

Dionysios Solomos & Greece’s National Anthem
Dionysios Solomos is one of Greece’s most revered poets and is best known as the author of the “Hymn to Liberty,” which later became Greece’s national anthem. Inspired by the Greek War of Independence, the poem captures the spirit of freedom and national identity in 158 stanzas, making it one of the longest national anthems in the world!
4 Nights in Kefalonia — An Ionian Wonderland
A brief ferry ride from Zakynthos sees things get a little bigger, a little greener, and believe it or not, even more picturesque.
Enhance The Experience
For a truly unforgettable transition between Zakynthos and Kefalonia, this journey can be elevated with a private boat transfer. Along the way, travelers can explore hidden coves, secluded beaches, and untouched stretches of coastline that remain inaccessible by land, transforming a simple transfer into a memorable Ionian experience.
Rising out of the Ionian like a lush, green utopia, Kefalonia reveals itself as the largest and perhaps most diverse of the islands.
Yet what I appreciate about it most is its sheer range. From north to south, east to west, it constantly shifts in character, offering a landscape that feels both grand and intimate at the same time. And an adventure (no other way to call it) through its natural wonders is the perfect introduction to it.
In the depths of Drogarati Cave, you’ll discover a dramatic subterranean world shaped over thousands of years, before emerging into something entirely different at Melissani Lake, where sunlight pours through the cave’s ceiling and illuminates the turquoise waters within with an almost neon-like glow.
Above ground, Kefalonia is no less striking. The pastel charm of Assos, watched over by its Venetian castle, offers a slower, more romantic pace, while Myrtos Beach delivers one of the most iconic coastal scenes in Greece, where white cliffs meet impossibly blue waters.
Explore Further

Travelers looking to further deepen their connection with Kefalonia can also visit a family-run prickly pear farm, Greece’s only of its kind. Stroll through the grounds, learn about the cultivation of this unique fruit, taste local tsipouro paired with fresh, seasonal meze sourced directly from the farm, and if up to it, even do some light farm work in the process!
Of course, no island visit is complete without a beach day. A guided hike to Fteri Beach reveals one of the island’s most untouched corners, where crystalline waters and pristine white shores reward every step.
Wild, elegant, and endlessly captivating, Kefalonia is where the Ionian reveals its full spectrum, leaving an evergreen and everlasting impression.
1 Night in Athens — A Grand Finale by the Sea
For the final night, it’s always great to bring the journey full circle, but with a perspective that feels entirely new.
After days spent among the lush landscapes and turquoise waters of the Ionian, returning to Athens offers a moment to pause and reflect. But rather than revisiting the city’s historic center, travelers now get to reveal a slightly different side of the capital; one that unfolds along the Athenian Riviera.
Passing through seaside enclaves like Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza, the city gradually gives way to sweeping coastal views, where the deep blue of the Saronic Gulf stretches endlessly beside you.
And then, at the edge of the Attica peninsula, comes Cape Sounion. Perched dramatically above the sea, the Temple of Poseidon stands as both a monument and a moment. As the sun begins to set, the marble columns glow against the horizon, creating a scene that feels both powerful and serene.
If anything can serve as a perfect finale to luminous Ionian adventure, this is it.
Departure — Until the Next Discovery
If there’s one thing this journey leaves you with, it’s that Greece’s island life extends far beyond the familiar silhouettes of the Cyclades.
In the Ionian, a different rhythm unfolds; one shaped by lush landscapes, elegant charm, and a spirit of discovery that feels both refreshing and deeply authentic. It is a side of Greece that surprises and captivates, making it an inspired choice for repeat visitors or travelers seeking something beyond the expected.
And for me, that’s where its true magic lies. Because no matter how many times you visit Greece, there is always something new waiting just beyond the horizon.
