We all have a favorite holiday tradition. Be it heartfelt, fun, or even a little weird, it is a large part of what keeps us eagerly awaiting the festive season (along with the food, of course).

Every country has its own customs, but if there’s one that really knows how to bring in this time of the year, it’s Italy. This is when its gleaming Renaissance façades find new inspiration. When its most elegant places become immersed in soul-stirring cultural celebration. And, if it’s even possible, when it serves up more delicious culinary treats than ever.

For our Italy by Travelive team, this season represents something truly special. So, let’s join them in celebrating it by finding out which Italian holiday traditions are their favorite.

Deborah – Regional Director

While originally from New York, Italy forever holds a place in Deborah’s heart; and these two festive treats may play a bit part in that. From the effervescent tang of Prosecco to the rich and scrumptious texture of Italy’s famous panettone, this is the perfect way to add some fizz to the season. And you can take Deborah’s word for it.

Prosecco & Panettone

“Everyone knows exactly what to get me for the holidays. There’s just something about the bubbly crispiness of Prosecco that makes everything feel brighter. And ‘panettone,’ with its soft buttery crumb and specks of citrus and raisins, is the one treat that instantly says ‘it’s holidays season’ in Italy. Together, they’re a perfect representation of Italy’s festive spirit. It really doesn’t get jollier than this.”

Oriana – Senior Travel Planner

Oriana knows Italy like the back of her hand; something that comes in very handy (pun not intended) when putting together top-notch cross-country adventures. However, when the festive lights go up, there’s no place she’d rather be than back home in Naples. And here’s why.

The History of the Neapolitan Nativity Scene

“San Gregorio Armeno brings the holiday spirit year-round. But during the festive season, it’s a whole other story. Lined with Nativity scenes and alive with magic, walking through this street leads you into the heart of Italy’s often uncanny traditions. When you see Holy Family figures sit alongside footballers, politicians, even TV stars, you truly feel the heart of Neapolitan culture: a perfect blend of art, humor, and tradition that never fails to make me smile.”

The Game of Tombola

“Tombola (Italian version of Bingo) is pure Christmas joy. Families gather around the table for hours, calling numbers from the ‘Smorfia,’ each carrying its own meaning or story. Laughter, teasing, and playful superstition fill the room. And, of course, it’s never complete without sweet treats like struffoli and roccocò.

George Koumarianos – Senior Operations Manager

Italy always carries a bit of sparkle. But if you really want to see it ignite, then Venice during the holidays is the place to be; as George will eagerly point out.

Venice in Lights: A Festive City on Water

“For me, Italy’s holiday season is synonymous with Venice. That’s when the city and Mestre glow with miles of lights and projections that reflect off canals and stone façades, turning even the quietest calli into something magical. Not to mention the spectacle that is the New Year’s Eve fireworks over the Bacino di San Marco.”

“And then you have the Christmas markets at Campo Santo Stefano or San Polo, where the ice rink adds a playful buzz. Or Murano, where glassmakers celebrate the season in true Venetian style with Natale di Vetro. However, one of my favorite moments is the Santa Water Parade on the Grand Canal. Seeing Santas rowing past historic palazzi, cheered on from the banks, is truly something else.”

Federica – Travel Planner

Think Lake Como can’t get any more enchanting? Think again. Even one of Italy’s most romantic and elegant regions can resist the festive season’s spell. And who better to guide us through its winter magic than Federica? After all, that’s where she’s from!

Holidays on Lake Como

“There’s no place I’d rather be during the holidays than back home, spending time with the people I love. That’s when the smaller villages like Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio grow quieter, while the towns of Como and Lecco come alive with glowing lights, creative themes, and a unique festive spirit.

“The Christmas markets too are unmissable. Wooden stalls filled with delicious treats and handmade gifts; a cup of hot chocolate or vin brulé (warm spiced wine) in your hands; pure magic. There’s also ice-skating (no, not on the lake), making everything even more like a winter wonderland.”

Alexandra – Travel Planner

For Alexandra, it’s Rome for the holidays. We’re talking about the Christmas market at Piazza Navona. Spanish Steps decorated by the biggest designer luxury brands. A fun theme park for the younger ones at Villa Borghese. And, of course, delicious panettone (Deborah’s favorite) in some of Italy’s most renowned pasticcerie. But it’s the Midnight Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica that holds a particularly special place in her heart.

Midnight Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica

“Attending the Midnight Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica feels like stepping into the very heart of the season. The hush of the crowd, the swell of the choir, the breathtaking beauty of the Basilica creates an atmosphere unlike any other. You really feel a deep sense of connection looking at the candlelit faces, and the experience becomes even more meaningful when shared with someone dear. Last year, I had the privilege of taking my mother to the Mass, a moment I now hold among the most treasured memories of my life. This festive season, I can only wish that our readers and Travelive clients may experience a similarly unforgettable celebration, filled with joy and togetherness!”

Practical Information for the Midnight Mass at the Vatican:

Midnight Mass at the Vatican is celebrated by the Pope in St. Peter’s Basilica every Christmas Eve.

Entry is free, but tickets are required and must be requested well in advance.

Seating inside the Basilica is limited, so many visitors choose to watch from St. Peter’s Square, where the liturgy is broadcast on large screens.

Plan to arrive early for security checks and to secure a good viewing spot.

Expect a moving and unforgettable Christmas Eve experience unlike any other.

Sara Lollo – Travel Planner

A great holiday tradition is like a time machine. It can take you back to the most joyous and significant moments of your life; those which create core memories that last a lifetime. And Sara’s turns back the clocks in the most delicious way possible.

The Epiphany Puff-Pastry Camel of Varese

“One of my favorite holiday traditions has to be the Epiphany puff-pastry camel from my hometown, Varese. Sold in local pastry shops every January 6, this sweet, buttery, and instantly recognizable treat is a must-have on Epiphany morning!”

“The tradition goes back nearly a century, most commonly linked to the Three Wise Men and the Magi’s journey to Bethlehem. As a child, picking up a warm camel from our favorite bakery brought a magical end to the holiday season. Outside Varese, few people have ever heard of this pastry, which makes it even more special to those who grew up with it.”

Dora – Reservations Manager

Tuscany is quintessential Italy. Rolling hills, golden vineyards, rustic allure; it has it all. But that doesn’t stop it from getting quintessential festive during the holidays; which see its authentic charm reveal new, soulful dimensions. And this is what Dora loves about them the most.

The Living Nativity: Tuscany’s Christmas Soul

“One of the traditions that moves me most during the holidays in Tuscany is the Presepe Vivente, the Living Nativity Scene. In small historic villages like Greccio or San Piero a Grado, entire communities come together to recreate the Nativity with candlelit streets, artisan workshops, and locals dressed in period costumes.”

“What makes it special is how real it feels. This isn’t a performance, but a shared moment of heritage and faith, where even visitors are welcomed as part of the village. Walking through these scenes, surrounded by history, warmth, and quiet devotion, truly captures the soul of a Tuscan Christmas.”

Tatiana Deligiannidi – Customer Support Assistant

Tatiana may not hail from Italy, but her passion for it is unrivaled. Having spent a significant amount of time there during her studies, she developed a true fondness for its culture. And it all comes flooding back during the holiday season; or whenever someone brings up Krampus (you’ll see in a minute). Even when home in Greece, Italy continues to fill her memories with some of its most festive moments. And here are some of them.

Epiphany in Venice

Travelive & WTB Italian Classics FAM 2026

Now that we’ve covered the logistics, let’s see what kind of adventures await on Travelive’s 2026 Italy FAM Trip!

3 Days in Rome

Who doesn’t want a chance to say ‘when in Rome’ when actually in Rome? Well, you may just get an opportunity to do so! Beginning in the Eternal City, the trip is set to cover some of the capital’s most enduring and endearing highlights. From the moment you arrive in Rome Fiumicino Airport, classic Italian hospitality will be waiting at a perfectly located property like L’Orologio Roma, just steps from the city’s most famous attractions.

Speaking of which, when in Rome (here we go again) you shall also learn why an evening golf cart tour is a great alternative for some traffic-free sightseeing that’s easy on the feet. Tick the Colosseum off your bucket list. And see exactly why the treasures of the Vatican Museum deserve to be appreciated with an exclusive early-morning visit.

Not bad for the first couple of days, right? Wait until you get to Florence!

2 Days in Florence

Has anyone ever told you that it’s all in the journey, not the destination? Then prepare to experience exactly what that means upon leaving Rome and heading to Florence. Making your way across the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside, pause for a tour and lunch in one of its storied cities, turning the transfer into a delightful road trip; a great use of time during a short visit.

Once in Florence, properties like Hotel L’Orologio Firenze and Hotel Santa Maria Novella shall welcome you in Piazza Santa Maria Novella, one of the most beautiful squares of Tuscany’s capital. From there, all roads lead to discovery. Embrace the artistic heart of Italy in Piazza del Duomo and along the Ponte Vecchio. See its creative spirit blossom through crafts of traditional artisans. And, of course, sample its culinary gifts with generous servings of pasta, locally sourced cheeses, and lip-smacking gelato.

2 Days in Venice

While all roads may lead to Rome, this journey concludes on the timeless canals of Venice. After a scenic train voyage to the Floating City, find a new home along the Grand Canal at Hotel L’Orologio, a unique property within reach of the Rialto Bridge.

As you will quickly come to find out, in Venice, discovery is floating all around you; quite literally. Waste no time soaking up its charms and venture on an evening stroll through its storied alleyways, uncovering why this is one of the best ways to reveal the city’s secrets and enjoy its most iconic sights away from the crowds.

Beyond the glowing allure of a Venetian night, commemorate the grandeur of St. Mark’s, the intrigue of Doge’s Palace, and the whispers of the iconic Bridge of Sighs with a quintessential gondola ride, letting La Serenissima’s beauty unfold before you in all its buoyant splendor.

Italy Awaits!

Italy’s Easter (Pasqua) celebrations are as rich and varied as the regions themselves. While the Vatican and major cathedrals hold center stage for many travelers, some of the most unforgettable experiences take place in quiet piazzas, family kitchens, and hilltop villages where tradition runs deep—and occasionally a little wild.

The 10 customs below go beyond what travelers expect from Easter in Italy. They bring together food, folklore, and festivity in ways that make clients feel like locals. And with Travelive’s destination experts on the ground, we can build experiences around any one of these unique moments to make them even more special!

Florence’s Exploding Cart – Scoppio del Carro

On Easter Sunday, Florence quite literally sparks joy. In the heart of the city, a 30-foot antique cart —lavishly decorated and pulled by white oxen — is wheeled to the Duomo and packed with fireworks. During Easter mass, the Archbishop lights a mechanical dove (symbolizing the Holy Spirit), which zips down a wire from the altar to ignite the cart in the square outside. The result? A spectacular mid-morning fireworks show, all to ensure a good harvest and peace for the year ahead. It’s centuries-old, loud, and utterly unforgettable — a bucket-list event we can a arrange VIP viewing for.

The Running Madonna – La Madonna che Scappa in Sulmona, Abruzzo

In this emotionally charged tradition, a statue of the Virgin Mary is carried through the piazza dressed in black mourning. As she “sees” the resurrected Christ across the square, her cloak is yanked away to reveal a joyful green dress. She then rushes toward her son, to the sound of fireworks and applause. This moving reenactment captures the very moment of hope that defines Easter and is as much a local treasure as Sulmona’s famous confetti almonds.

Sicily’s Sweetest Symbol – Agnelli Pasquali

In Sicily, Easter is sweet — and symbolic. The agnello pasquale (Easter lamb) is made of hand-sculpted marzipan, painted with vibrant detail, and filled with pistachio paste. They’re especially popular in towns like Favara, where these edible artworks are displayed in bakery windows like sculptures.

Liguria’s Iconic Easter Pie – Torta Pasqualina

In Genoa and across Liguria, Easter lunch includes torta pasqualina, a rustic pie with layers of thin pastry filled with ricotta, sautéed greens, Parmigiano, and whole eggs that bake beautifully into cross-sections inside the pie. It’s a local favorite that can be incorporated into market visits or cooking classes.

La Pasquetta – Easter Monday’s Country Escape

Easter Monday, or La Pasquetta, is all about picnics and playful traditions. Families and friends pack baskets and head for parks, vineyards, or the seaside with frittatas, grilled lamb, fresh cheeses, and bottles of local wine. Some towns also host egg-rolling contests or donkey races.

Venice’s Flight of the Angel – Festa dell’Angelo

In Venice and nearby towns, a young child dressed as an angel is attached to a wire and gently glides over the piazza from the bell tower, tossing rose petals or confetti on the crowd below. While rare at Easter, this tradition lives on in smaller towns with a twist.

Umbria’s Egg Battles – Lo Scoppio delle Uova

In small Umbrian towns like Todi, families bring hard-boiled eggs to Easter breakfast and engage in ‘egg duels’ — tapping their eggs together. The last uncracked egg wins and brings its holder good luck for the year.

Rome’s Star Dish – Abbacchio Romano

In the Eternal City, no Easter meal is complete without abbacchio, or roast spring lamb. Seasoned with garlic, rosemary, and lemon, it’s traditionally served with Roman-style potatoes or chicory. We can arrange for this to be a feature of private chef experiences or countryside meals for clients.

Naples’ Chocolate Egg Surprise

In Naples, chocolate Easter eggs often contain personalized surprises: love notes, small gifts, or charms. Bakeries compete for the most creative designs, and clients can even customize their own.

The Dove-Shaped Cake – Colomba di Pasqua

Symbolizing peace, the colomba is a buttery cake shaped like a dove and topped with pearl sugar and almonds. It’s perfect for tastings during food tours or as a thoughtful welcome gift.

Italy is irresistible. The land of unrelenting flair, exquisite food, and unmistakable cultural allure, this is the kind of destination that everyone should explore at least once in their lifetime. And this is exactly what we sought to evoke during Travelive’s recent FAM Trip, which saw our cherished travel agents join us in discovering the renowned charms of Rome, Florence, and Venice through the most exquisite experiences, plenty of pizza, and lots of laughs!

The Eternal City Unveiled

Our storied adventure began in the Rome, where, following a private transfer from Fiumicino Airport, our eager group of travelers were met by the warm hospitality of the elegant L’Orologio Roma.

Housed in the historic Lavaggi Pacelli building, only a few minutes from some of the city’s quintessential attractions, this elegant 4-star property proved to be an ideal base for our exploration of Italy’s esteemed capital — with the cocktails and canapés on the rooftop terrace of the Santa Cocktail Club serving as a cherry on top!

While the hotel’s refined ambiance and stylish rooms made quite an impression, it was time to take to the streets of Rome and be dazzled by Italy’s historical icon. After a laid-back orientation via a charming golf cart tour of such essential gems as the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona, we were keen to unravel Rome in all its glory with a guided exploration of its most cherished sights and flavors.

It’s difficult to comprehend how the locals can get used to the almighty symbols and delights of this city. For as the next day came and we marveled at the divine masterpieces of the Vatican Museums — including Michelangelo’s majestic Sistine Chapel — took in the atmosphere of Campo de’ Fiori, the Jewish Ghetto, and Trastevere, and indulged in tastings of supplì and carciofi alla giudia, we couldn’t help but be left in awe of all its wonders.

Vibrant, historic, and simply legendary, Rome was hard to say goodbye to, but a delicious, farewell dinner at Restaurant Lagana, did soften the blow. With spirits lifted by traditional Italian dishes, we retreated for a night of rest in anticipation of our next stop — Florence!

Orvieto and the Jewel of Renaissance

Upon saying ‘ciao’ to Rome, it was time to take a scenic drive through the rolling landscapes of Umbria and Tuscany on our way to Florence — but not before venturing on a magical detour through time to the hilltop town of Orvieto, whose medieval charm and breathtaking cathedral is the stuff fairytales are made of!

After traversing the storybook streets and soaking up the authentic, spellbinding atmosphere of Orvieto, Florentine hospitality was ready for us with open arms and two stunning accommodations: Hotel L’Orologio Firenze and Hotel Santa Maria Novella.

The Hotel L’Orologio Firenze, overlooking the picturesque Santa Maria Novella Square, charmed us with its unique and refined design. Inspired by luxury watchmaking, each floor of this 4-star property pays homage to legendary timepieces in the likes of Rolex and Patek Philippe while sprinkling in some Florentine essence and modern luxury.

Meanwhile, the Hotel Santa Maria Novella, set in a 19th-century mansion, resonated with history, combining old-world charm with contemporary comforts — while the rooftop terrace provided an unforgettable view over Florence and the rolling Tuscan hills.

The next day, the Tuscan countryside called upon us, and we set out for San Gimignano and Siena. Nicknamed the “The Town of Five Towers,” San Gimignano’s medieval architecture dominated the skyline, towering over us as we wandered through its charming streets. A visit to a local winery followed, where exquisite wines flowed in tandem with traditional Tuscan cuisine, complemented by views of stunning vineyards.

Strolling the earth-colored streets of Siena, we explored the stunning Piazza del Campo, home to the famed Palio horse race, and admired the city’s immersive Gothic architecture, before heading back to Florence.

On our final morning in Florence, a guided walking tour of the city left us with visual souvenirs of such sights as the Piazza del Duomo, where the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Brunelleschi’s Dome left us speechless; Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Ghiberti’s Baptistry doors; and, of course, Michelangelo’s David, an essential masterpiece of Renaissance art.

Our memories filled with prized mementos, we boarded a train to Venice, reflecting on the beauty and artistry that had surrounded us at every turn.

Bright and early the next morning, Venice was up and ready to enchant us. Diving into the City of Canals with a guided walking tour, we reveled in the splendor of St. Mark’s Square, St. Mark’s Basilica, and the Doge’s Palace, before venturing into old prisons across the fabled Bridge of Sighs — thankfully innocent of any crimes. And, of course, no visit to Venice would be complete without a gondola ride, which allowed us to leisurely float through the city’s labyrinth of canals, as we savored its timeless beauty from the water.

After soaking up Venice’s rich history, it was time for a taste of its culinary treasures. A public vaporetto ride took us to the Cannaregio district, where two charming osterias introduced us to Venetian culinary and viticultural traditions with such specialties as the delicious cicchetti — Venetian-style tapas — and an exquisite tasting of wines from the Veneto region. Needless to say, we longed for seconds!

Depending on your passions and interests, today we suggest either a day trip to Lake Como visiting Como, Bellagio and Varena, or if you prefer to discover the gems of Milan, then a tour of the Duomo is a must followed by a visit to Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece – the last supper.

In the afternoon, cure your shopping bug with a visit to the Christmas Markets at Piazza Duomo and the nearby Castello Sforzesco, and for the evening, we suggest a great dining experience in the trendy Brera district.

Day 9 New Year’s Eve

In the afternoon we suggest a visit to the Rialto Market for fresh produce and local delicacies, and in the evening (depending on performance schedules), we would recommend attending a Vivaldi concert in a historic church.

Day 12 Departure

All good things must come to an end, and so does this itinerary. You will have an arranged private transfer from your hotel to Venice airport for your flight back home.

Day 1 Barcelona Essence

Welcome to Spain! Upon your arrival at Barcelona Airport, you will meet with your experienced driver and enjoy a relaxing and scenic transfer to Barcelona City. Embrace the essence of Spanish tradition with today’s tour. The best way to experience an authentic Flamenco show is by visiting a Tablao, and Tablao Flamenco Cordobes Barcelona is considered the main historical tablao of Barcelona. It was founded in 1970 under the management of a family of artists and ever since, it has brought all the legendary flamenco artists to Barcelona, becoming a reference in the flamenco world without losing an ounce of authenticity, always faithful to its historical legacy as a tablao flamenco.

Day 2 Gaudi Wonders in Barcelona

Explore Barcelona’s most important sites, synonymous with Gaudi’s genius. Accompanied by your experienced guide, a Gaudi expert, will delve into the architect’s life, work, and influence, showcasing why seven of his creations are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Start at the iconic Sagrada Familia, a breathtaking basilica begun in 1852 and still under construction. Next, visit Park Guell for a guided tour of Gaudi’s emblematic work. Continue to Passeig de Gracia, admiring its modernist buildings. Discover Casa Batlló, a masterpiece originally built in 1877 and transformed by Gaudi into an architectural gem.

Day 3 Vatican Museums

Explore some of the world’s most renowned landmarks with today’s tour around the Vatican Museums. Αccompanied by your experienced guide, delve into the history, lesser-known details, and intriguing stories of these magical sites. Visit the grandiose Vatican Museum, with masterpieces from the masters of the Renaissance period, including the famous Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo.

Day 4 Walk through Ancient Rome

Enjoy an in-depth visit to the Roman Forum and Colosseum. The Roman Forum is a rectangular forum, surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of Rome. The Colosseum needs no introductions: One of the most iconic and emblematic structures of Italy is the largest ancient amphitheater ever built and is still the largest standing amphitheater in the world today.

Day 5 Departure

This Mediterranean adventure not only provided a glimpse into the rich heritage of these iconic cities but also offered an opportunity to live their stories.

Day 4 The Valley of Temples

Visit one of the world’s most impressive archaeological sites: the Valley of the Temples. This site boasts outstanding and nearly intact examples of Greek art and architecture, situated about 3km below modern Agrigento. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valley of the Temples is one of the Mediterranean’s most mesmerizing destinations, showcasing the best-preserved Doric temples outside Greece. These temples, celebrated since Goethe’s praise in the 18th century, are Sicily’s largest tourist attraction. Though impressive, what remains today are mere vestiges of the ancient city of Akragas, once the fourth-largest city in the known world.

Day 5 Tales of Syracuse

Founded by Greeks from Corinth, Syracuse quickly became the most flourishing city in Magna Graecia. Accompanied by your experienced guide, trace its ancient splendor in the Archaeological Park, the Greek and Roman theaters, and the enigmatic Ear of Dionysius—a cave with perfect acoustics, reputedly used by the tyrant Dionysius as a prison. Explore Ortigia, the heart of Syracuse, connected to the mainland by a 19th-century bridge. Wander through its charming streets, lined with artists’ workshops, noble palaces, and Baroque squares, where the scent of the sea fills the air.

Day 6 Taormina, Mon Amour

Experience the elegance and sophistication of Taormina through a captivating walking tour. Explore cobblestone streets adorned with boutique shops, leading to the ancient theater. Originally built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and later restored by the Romans, this grand amphitheater once hosted Greek tragedies and now hosts theater festivals and special events. Accompanied by your experienced guide, discover the city’s highlights and enjoy leisure time along Corso Umberto, Taormina’s main thoroughfare. Pause at charming cafes to savor a refreshing gelato or sip almond-flavored wine, a local delicacy that perfectly captures the essence of this enchanting city.

Day 7 Day at Leisure
