It seems that our Greece by Travelive team is always on the move. But how could we not be? How could we say no to yet another adventure when living in none other than Greece? After all, if we don’t end up on a mythical quest upon leaving our offices in Athens, it’s sure to call upon us from somewhere beyond.

And this is a call we recently answered, when Greece’s first capital, Nafplio invited us to savor a couple of its iconic experiences. What did it have planned for us? Well, let’s head back to the Peloponnese and find out.

A Peloponnesian Classic

Greece is like a hit parade of amazing travel destinations. You have the chart-toppers; the deep cuts; and then you have that one classic that all fans spin every once in a while. Nafplio is that classic. And every time you visit it, you remember exactly why it hits all the right notes.

Whenever you find yourself in the Argolis region of the Peloponnese, you can always hear Nafplio calling. Blending coastal elegance, neoclassical charm, and magical Venetian fortifications, this seaside town creates an irresistible old-world atmosphere that feels both storied and effortlessly romantic. Cobbled lanes unfold beneath bougainvillea-draped balconies, the Bourtzi fortress floats serenely in the harbor, and life here seems to move at a pace that invites you to linger. For travelers exploring the Peloponnese, Nafplio is not just a stop, it’s a highlight.

Shaping Tradition | A Hands-On Ceramic Experience

After briefly soaking up Nafplio’s cosmopolitan charms, it was time to get our hands dirty. Beginning our day with a creative turn, we found ourselves at a local artisan’s workshop, set amid the meditative expanse of Peloponnesian plains.

There, surrounded by raw clay and the quiet focus of the studio, our team was set to learn the fundamentals of Greek ceramic craftsmanship. To experience firsthand the process of molding simple earth into something functional, personal, and most importantly, memorable: a mug to hold our copious daily amounts of coffee.

Feeling like ancient Greek masters (we use that term very loosely), we discovered just how much care, intuition, and artistry goes into even the simplest object. There was laughter, a bit of trial and error, some exasperation (maybe more than some), but ultimately plenty of appreciation for the artisans who keep this age-old craft alive. It was the kind of experience that slows you down, reconnects you to the tactile, and leaves you with a deeper respect for Greece’s living traditions.

With our creative muscles flexed and appetites awakened, our next stop was all about indulgence. Stepping into a boutique food shop dedicated to small-scale Greek producers, we were invited to experience Nafplio, and the wider Peloponnese, through its flavors.

A generous spread of cured cold cuts and three distinct local cheeses set the stage, each telling a story of tradition, cultivation, and timeless appreciation of food (something we’re very much aware of). Jars of jams, marmalades, and regional delicacies lined the shelves, tempting us at every turn. Resistance, as it turns out, was futile. For once we had gotten a taste of the establishment’s mouthwatering provatina (rich, deeply flavorful lamb) several of us couldn’t help but take some home; almost depleting the owner’s stock in the process.

Flavorsome and insightful, it was a delicious reminder that at the end of the day, the most memorable journeys are often savored one bite at a time.

Answering Nafplio’s Call

As the day drew to a close, one thing was clear: Nafplio has a way of revealing itself through experiences that feel both intimate and deeply rooted. Even amid its refined Venetian charms, it remains a quintessential Greek gem that invites visitors to get closer to the people and traditions that define it.

For travelers exploring Greece through the Peloponnese and beyond, Nafplio offers exactly this kind of layered discovery: creative, flavorful, and effortlessly elegant. And for us at Greece by Travelive, days like this reaffirm why immersive, thoughtfully crafted experiences matter; for they are the kind that turn destinations into stories, and visits into memories.

And this is why when Nafplio calls, and it will, travelers shouldn’t think twice about answering it.

2 Nights in Athens — The Cradle of Civilization

Begin your journey in Athens, where regardless of how far time leads into the future, the past echoes in eternity.

After settling into your hotel of choice, waste no time in weaving some myths of your own by heading out along the golden curves of the Athenian Riviera. On your way, see Greece’s architectural pedigree embrace modernity across the sleek façade of the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center. Learn about the therapeutic essence of Lake Vouliagmeni, a natural spa whose warm waters have drawn seekers of well-being for centuries. All before greeting the sunset on the cliffs on Cape Sounion, where the Temple of Poseidon has watched the Aegean ignite in hues of crimson long before you could snap a dozen pictures of it.

The next day, dive deeper into Athens’ beating heart at the Acropolis, where the Parthenon and Erechtheion still crown the city as guardians of its Golden Age. From its sacred heights, descend to the lively Varvakios Agora and discover Greece’s must-try flavors at the city’s bustling central market. There, amid the fragrance of fresh olives and mouthwatering tastes of local delicacies, watch Athens transcend myth and become a living, breathing metropolis.

A 4-Night Odyssey Across the Mainland

Having set a mythical tone in Athens, crack open your copy of a Homeric epic and embark on a multi-day adventure across the Peloponnese, where kings, Olympians, and gods reside amid glorious plains.

Cross the depths of the Corinth Canal and step into Mycenae, the fabled kingdom of Agamemnon. Enter through the Lion Gate, wander among Cyclopean walls, and let the heartbeat of an ancient warrior fill your chest. Continue to Epidaurus and recite a poem of your own at its iconic theater, where even the quietest of voices can be heard across its vast array of seats.

Not long after, feel a warm sea breeze welcome you in Nafplio, Greece’s first capital. There, seaside promenades, quaint alleys framed by Venetian facades, and the hilltop fortress of Palamidi set the stage for an evening of cosmopolitan charm.

From there, the path leads to Monemvasia, a medieval town carved into rock, and onward to Mystras (the “Wonder of the Morea”), a ghostly Byzantine city of palaces and frescoed churches. Finally, cross the finish line of your Greek Odyssey at Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where cheers of timeless victories still echo across its ancient stadium.

With your torch lit, you can now blaze your way toward the crossroads of civilizations, where Turkey shall be waiting.

Awaken from your Greek myth to find yourself in Istanbul, an intercontinental mecca whose resume includes reigning over Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. Upon arrival, check into your hotel of choice in one of its cosmopolitan districts and begin unearthing influences that stretch a tapestry of culture across millennia.

Stand beneath the soaring dome of Hagia Sophia, admire the harmony of faith and art across the Iznik tiles of the Blue Mosque, and walk through the Hippodrome where chariots once thundered with imperial gusto. See history reflect in the luminous waters of the Underground Cistern, before emerging into the lively stalls of the Grand Bazaar, where silk, spices, and treasures still echo the spirit of the Silk Road. Balance your steps between two continents with a Bosphorus cruise, where Europe and Asia meet in shimmering waters.

2 Nights in Izmir — Time Travel in Anatolia

From the heart of empires to the gateway to antiquity, a brief flight shall land you in Izmir, where coastal charm gives way to a world of ancient treasure.

It is from here that you shall venture back in time and uncover Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world. Who knows, maybe you’ll even come across someone in a toga, as you wander marble avenues where apostles and philosophers once walked or stand before the grand Library of Celsus.

Once you’ve imagined the roar of crowds inside the Great Theater, pay a spiritual homage at the House of the Virgin Mary, before unwinding in the nearby village of Şirince, where cobbled lanes, boutique wineries, and fruit-scented air offer a gentler taste of Turkish tradition.

3 Nights in Cappadocia — Across Magical Landscapes

You can’t experience Turkey at its finest without witnessing the magic of Cappadocia, where nature and history are in constant competition to amaze you.

From the unique comforts of your chosen cave hotel, explore the Göreme Open Air Museum, where centuries-old cave churches still glow with vivid Byzantine frescoes. Climb Uçhisar Castle, the highest point in the region, for sweeping views over valleys overgrown with stone chimneys and pigeon houses carved into cliffs. And descend into vast underground cities like Kaymakli, where ancient settlers sought refuge in a honeycomb of tunnels and subterranean chapels.

Let another magical day in Cappadocia begin in a hot-air balloon, as you drift over its dreamscape and watch the sun cast golden light across its lunar terrain. Then, trade the skies for a scenic camel safari, tracing Silk Road paths across the Red and Rose Valleys, where kaleidoscopic landscapes change color as the sun rises and sets beyond them.

A perfect culmination to your storied journey across civilizations and empires, Cappadocia serves as a reminder that no matter where you go, there is a place out there waiting to take your breath away.

Departure

Now that the crossroads have led you to Greece’s myth-laden temples and Turkey’s empire-forged wonders, it’s time to take the path back home. As you head off to Istanbul to catch your departure flight, know that not many can say they’ve stood at the meeting point of two civilizations, but now you can; and with that, you’ve joined the ranks of true explorers!

It may resonate with modern sounds today, but at its heart, Athens still echoes with antiquity that transcends its vibrant streets.

Begin your journey by ascending to the Acropolis, where the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike stand guard and offer sweeping views of the city. Meander through Plaka’s winding lanes, discovering treasures like the Stoa of Attalus and Hadrian’s Library, before pausing at Syntagma Square to witness the ceremonial guard in front of Parliament.

Then, venture beyond the marble columns of the city, and hike up Mount Parnassus to admire its wild beauty. Wander through fragrant fir forests, climb dramatic cliffs, and peek into Eptastomos cave, once thought to be the entrance to the underworld of Hades. With every step, myth and nature entwine, and Greece’s ancient spirit comes thrillingly to life.

3 Nights — Nafplio | Coastal Vistas and Hidden Monasteries

From Athens’ storied streets and Parnassus’ pristine peaks, head to the Peloponnesian coast where Nafplio awaits with neoclassical charm, quaint alleys, and panoramic sea views. Hop on a bike for a cycling adventure that fills your lungs with aromatic scents of olive groves and unfurls a world of coastal views. Enjoy a picnic on a sun-drenched beach before putting those delicious Greek calories to use and pedaling up to a hillside chapel set against a backdrop of the Argolic Gulf.

Then, switch gears for a hike along the Rados River trail to the abandoned Avgou Monastery, an emblem of faith and mystery carved into a cliff overlooking the rugged magnificence of Argolis. Guided by nature and history, wind through the Stavropoidi-Kanapitsa Wildlife Refuge as every step reveals the unspoken beauty of Greece, where adventure meets heritage, and every corner invites discovery.

With the plains of the mainland conquered, board a short flight to Crete, where the old port city of Chania welcomes you with its Venetian charm, vibrant markets, and the guiding light of sunsets over its mesmerizing Egyptian lighthouse.

Once you’ve traversed the cobblestone streets of its scenic Old Town, trade city streets for mountain roads as you cycle into the White Mountains, towards villages such as Meskla and Zourva, where the air is coated with the scent of mountain herbs and the lullaby of cicadas. Hop off and rest beneath ancient trees, savor rustic snacks at a family-run taverna in Zourva and let the land reveal its slower rhythms before riding back through the dramatic gorge of Therisso.

Next, lace up your hiking boots, for no outdoor adventure in Crete is complete without descending into one of its legendary gorges. Challenge yourself with the famed Samaria Gorge, Europe’s longest, or opt for the equally striking Imbros Gorge, where towering cliffs and shadowed caves give way to the Libyan Sea. End your trek with a refreshing swim in Agia Roumeli or a Cretan feast in Komitades, where every bite carries the flavor of history.

Departure Day – Until Next Time

What began as an itinerary has transformed into a story in the great outdoors.

As you depart Greece, carry with you the spirit of the mountains that stirred myths, coastlines that shaped civilizations, and timeless paths that dared you to wander. And let this trip serve as a reminder that true adventure always awaits in Greece, all you have to do is step outside and discover it.

Until our next journey.

10 Nights / 11 Days

A Weeklong Journey Through Athens and the Peloponnese

Most people who dream of Greece picture sunsets in Santorini, beach bars in Mykonos, and feta on just about everything. Maybe they even imagine a donkey or two, though let’s be real, they’re probably not thinking of Hydra. But if you’re ready for a deeper, more soulful kind of trip, the real magic is waiting on the mainland.

This 10-night journey through Athens and the Peloponnese is for anyone who loves good food, incredible history, and a bit of pampering. It’s perfect for second-time visitors or just curious first-timers who want something more than just island hopping.

3 Nights in Athens

2 Nights in Nafplio

2 Nights in Mystras/Euphoria

3 Nights in Monemvasia

Days 1-2 — Athens | Ancient Stones and Sweet Treats

Start in Athens. Of course, you’ll visit the Acropolis, but not the crowded, let’s-get-it-over-with version. Think private tour with a great local guide who actually makes mythology feel alive. You’ll hear stories of gods, wars, and why this city still matters.

After walking among ancient columns, it’s time for something delicious. A food tour is the way to go. Imagine warm loukoumades drizzled in honey, street-side gyro stops, and the kind of flaky pastries that make you stop mid-bite to say: “Oh wow.”

Evenings are best spent on a rooftop with a cocktail in hand and the Parthenon glowing in the distance. It’s a bit cliché, but in the best possible way.

Days 3-4 — Nafplio | Ancient Theaters and Local Wine

On the way to Nafplio, take a detour to Mycenae and Epidaurus. These places are so ancient that even the Acropolis will feel like the new kid on the block. Meanwhile the theater at Epidaurus is a genuine acoustic masterpiece, where you can actually hear someone whisper from the stage.

Nafplio itself is all pastel houses, little shops, and a dreamy promenade by the sea. It’s the kind of place you instantly want to slow down in.

If you’re into wine, Nemea is nearby. There you’ll taste bold reds like Agiorgitiko that might just become your new favorite. Or if you prefer mountains over Merlot, the villages of Arcadia offer quiet stone houses, lazy lunches, and the best kind of doing-nothing afternoons.

Days 5-6 — Mystras and Euphoria Retreat | Castles and Calm

Next up is Mystras. This place is straight out of a storybook, with crumbling Byzantine churches, mountain views, and winding paths that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Then comes Euphoria Retreat, and trust us, it’s a game changer. There’s yoga in the forest, olive oil massages, and even a Byzantine hammam if you’re up for something ancient and steamy. The food is healthy but still delicious, and the staff somehow knows exactly what you need before you do.

Set aside a full day here to do absolutely nothing. No sightseeing, no plans. Just deep breaths, herbal tea, and maybe a salt room nap. It’s that kind of place.

Days 7-9 — Monemvasia and the Mani | Old Stones and Olive Groves

Now it’s time to head south to Monemvasia, a medieval town carved into a cliff and only accessible by foot. The whole place feels like a secret. No cars, just stone paths, flowers on balconies, and views that go on forever.

From there, explore the Mani Peninsula. It’s rugged, dramatic, and full of character. Think stone tower houses, tiny seaside villages, and stories that mix history with just a bit of myth.

One of the highlights is visiting a traditional mansion for a private olive oil and wine tasting. The hosts are passionate and generous, and the olive oil is so good you’ll want to drink it. Don’t worry, no one will judge.

Day 10 — Back to Athens | One More Sunset

The drive back to Athens is peaceful, perfect for reflecting on everything you’ve seen and eaten. One final night in the city lets you enjoy a simple dinner, maybe one last glass of wine, and a sunset stroll through Plaka.

Day 11 – Departure

By this point, Greece won’t just be a trip. It’ll feel like something you carry with you — a taste, a sound, a moment that makes you smile long after you’re home.

9 Nights / 10 Days

Flip through the pages of Western Civilization as you reveal the landscapes that inspired the world’s most enduring myths, dramas, and epics. Pay homage to Greece’s profound influence on modern culture as you see Athens through the eyes of Henry Miller, dive into Greek Mythology along the lines of Robert Graves, and experience Greek frontiers as they were depicted in the poetry of Homer. From the sacred ruins of Athens to the otherworldly beauty of Nafplio and the lyrical shores of Kefalonia, this adventure traces the footprints of gods, warriors, poets, and lovers, all on a journey through words that echo in eternity.

Welcome to Athens, the cradle of Western thought and the eternal muse of writers and philosophers. Upon arrival at Athens International Airport, a private driver shall be waiting to take you to your hotel of choice in a city whose very foundations emanate a mythical essence that still captivates the most wondering of imaginations to this very day. It is here that Henri Miller had the most marvelous vacation of his life, which spurred him to pen The Colossus of Maroussi, an ecstatic tribute to Greek vitality, freedom, and hospitality — and a love letter to the timeless, poetic allure of Greece’s iconic capital.

Suggested Experience

Delphi Day Tour — No journey to Greece is complete without a glimpse into its mythological past, and Delphi is your direct link to it. The center of an archaic world, this is the sacred place where Apollo once offered divine advice to mortals through his Oracle. As described in Robert Graves’ Greek Myths, this iconic sanctuary blends spiritual power and natural beauty, inviting reflection on fate, prophecy, and the magical revelations of ancient Greece.

Bid farewell to the monolithic charms of Athens as you head on an odyssey across the glorious plains of Peloponnese, home to some of the most famous kingdoms in Western literature. This is where legendary King Agamenon ruled Mycenae and his brother Menelaus, King of Sparta, lost his wife Helen to Trojan Prince Paris, leading to the storied events of the Iliad and the Odyssey. This is also where Greece’s storytelling traditions are kept alive, as the words of such Greek classics as Sophocles’ Antigone continue to resonate throughout the theatre of Epidaurus. Upon traveling southwest, you will check into your hotel of choice at the romantic seafront town of Nafplio, a picture-perfect poetic setting for an exploration of Homer’s epic legacy and the eternal relevance of Greek tragedy.

Suggested Experience

• Mycenae and Epidaurus Tour – Step into the Bronze Age kingdom of Agamemnon at the legendary site of Mycenae, where the Lion Gate and royal tombs bring Homer’s heroes to life. Continue to the ancient theater of Epidaurus, whose perfect acoustics still set the stage for Greek drama after millennia—a fitting place to reflect upon the moral and philosophical weight of Sophocles’ timeless plays.

4 Nights in Kefalonia

The dramatic wonders of Peloponnese are a tough act to follow, but the next chapter of your journey promises to deliver an equally stunning performance. After a brisk flight, you shall find yourself amid the lyrical Ionian shores of Kefalonia, an island where love, memory, and myth intertwine beneath the rustling of olive groves and the brilliance of sapphire seas. Immortalized in Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières, Kefalonia emerges as both paradise and battleground — a place that has romance and resilience etched into every cove and crag, echoing the joys and sorrows of wartime Greece. Vibrant and emotive, this is where fiction, history, and timeless beauty find their most tender union.

Suggested Experience

• Ithaca Island Tour – Visit the island of wandering king Odysseus as you explore the serene landscapes of Ithaca, the coveted residence of Homer’s iconic hero. Stroll through the harbor town of Vathi, gaze out from the Kathara Monastery atop Mount Niritos, and walk the winding lanes of Kioni, where the echoes of The Odyssey seem to linger in the Ionian breeze.

Departure

Having reached the last pages of this adventure, it’s time for this chapter of your travels to end. After a leisurely breakfast, a private driver will be waiting to take you to Kefalonia Airport for your flight to Athens, from where you will catch your departure flight home — bringing with you a suitcase full of stories fit for an epic of your own.

Autumn in Greece is like a well-kept secret-because it does not really exist. The season starts with the remaining of the summer heat that in end-October seems like an ever-ending curse, until the Greek weather switch turns on and you suddenly wonder why you did not unpack your winter clothes that weekend when you had some free time.

But we all know why. While summer tourists pack up their beach towels and head home, the country’s coastal towns transform into quiet, charming retreats, making it the perfect time to explore the Mediterranean without the crowds. That’s probably where you were last weekend enjoying the mild temperatures, golden sunsets, and the serene seascapes. If you want to plan your next excursion, take a look at the below suggestions.

A Romantic Escape

Nafplio, located in the Peloponnese, is often described as one of Greece’s most romantic towns, and autumn only adds to its allure. As you wander through its picturesque old town, you will find cobblestone streets lined with neoclassical mansions and blooming bougainvillea. Don’t miss a visit to the imposing Palamidi Fortress for panoramic views of the Argolic Gulf. In autumn, Nafplio’s historic charm is amplified by the absence of summer crowds, allowing you to fully soak in the town’s beauty.

Why visit in autumn? The weather is perfect for leisurely strolls along the harbor and for enjoying a coffee in Syntagma Square. Plus, the town’s nearby wineries are in full swing, offering wine tastings and harvest tours.

A Medieval Marvel

Monemvasia is a captivating medieval fortress town perched on a rocky islet off the Peloponnesian coast. Often referred to as the “Gibraltar of the East,” Monemvasia is accessible via a narrow causeway and offers a truly unique experience. Its winding cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and stunning views of the Aegean Sea make it an enchanting autumn destination. The absence of summer crowds allows you to explore its medieval alleys at a leisurely pace, taking in the history and serenity.

Why visit in autumn? Monemvasia’s medieval charm is even more captivating in the cooler months as the vibrant colors come to life under a clear autumn atmosphere. The weather is much more pleasant for exploring the castle and enjoying the quiet, romantic ambiance of this historic town.

I think we made that clear – that autumn in Greece is perfect for travelers who want to avoid the crowds but still enjoy pleasant weather and beautiful scenery. Coastal towns that are bustling in the summer become tranquil escapes in the fall. With the sea still warm enough for swimming, fresh produce available at local markets, and wine harvests in full swing, autumn offers a slower, more authentic Greek experience.

From Nafplio’s romantic charm to the medieval allure of Monemvasia, these coastal towns offer the perfect autumn getaway. Whether you’re seeking history, nature, or just a peaceful retreat, Greece’s coastline is waiting to be explored, with each town offering its own unique charm as the leaves begin to fall.
